“No.” Hank squeezed Evelyn close and sought her gaze. “I know I got him out of the fire.”

Hank didn’t admit the full measure of his fear. What if Russell lied about bringing Jamie to the hospital? Made up the whole bit about the priest, and everything? The lunatic would say anything, do anything to save his own skin. Would he have set Jamie down and let him run back into the tent? If so, Hank’s guilt would crush him. Jamie had to be alive.

“Then where is he?” Amato’s gentle question tightened Hank’s chest.

To Evelyn, Amato said, “I’m sorry, Mrs. Benson, but we’ve exhausted every other possibility. The city will bury all the bodies of unidentified victims tomorrow. If there is any chance of you claiming Jamie’s remains, we need to do it immediately.”

Evelyn stood on wobbly legs and turned to Hank. “I want to believe you—I do. But memories can be mistaken. Facts don’t lie. I can’t let Jamie be buried by strangers.” She asked Amato, “Take me there, please.” They turned their backs and started down the hallway.

Hank’s heart walked away with them, including any hope of a future with her. “Wait. I’m coming with you.”

Evelyn halted. When she turned around, she raised her chin and spoke in an even, low tone. “No. Jamie is gone, and I need to accept his death. You keep offering hope that he’s alive but no evidence.”

Truth. But the words cut Hank’s very soul and made it bleed.

“Go home, Hank. Thank you for all your help, but I need to do this alone.” Evelyn took Amato’s arm again, passed through the doorway, and disappeared around a corner.

Hank stood in the hallway so long a nurse asked if he needed assistance.

He did, but not the kind she could give.
